چکیده

Figure 2. Bearing capacity determined from astronaut bootprints (Modulus of Subgrade Reaction) [2]. Inset (upper left) shows a cross-section of bootprint and the forces involved. Other parameters can be measured using the astronaut’s boot or walking stick. They include surface temperature, dust accumulation, and penetrometry. These and other sensors will provide useful material information to guide site selection as well as astronaut suit-material selection.

Simulation of radar sounder echo from lunar surface layer and detection of lunar subsurface structure

In lunar exploration, spaceborne high frequency (HF) radar sounder is an effective tool for investigation of lunar subsurface structure in lunar exploration [1] [2]. The primary strategy for radar sounder detection of subsurface structure is through the time delay and intensity difference of the lunar surface and subsurface nadir echoes (Figure 1). It is important to fully understand electromag...

Scientific and Resource Characterization of Lunar Regolith Using Dielectric

Introduction: Water ice and ilmenite both have unique dielectric responses that can be used to detect their concentration as a function of depth, noninvasively from the lunar surface. Electrical measurements at the surface can also be used to determine the density of the lunar regolith. Subsurface water ice may exist in permanently shadowed regions near the poles of the Moon [1-6]. The presence...

High resolution mapping of TiO2 abundances on the Moon using the Hubble Space Telescope

[1] Samples of the lunar regolith returned by Apollo astronauts show large variations (0 to >10 wt%) in TiO2 abundance indicating complex compositional zonation within the lunar mantle. A long held goal of the lunar science community is the accurate determination of TiO2 abundances on the lunar surface through remote sensing methods. To date only limited progress has been made in this area usin...

Drilling Mechanism of Autonomous Burrowing Robot for Lunar Subsurface Exploration

Lunar and planetary subsurface exploration is of considerable significance. The authors have studied the strategies for subsurface excavation and propulsion for the development of a lunar subsurface explorer. The authors have proposed an autonomous robotic explorer which can burrow into the soils. Based on the strategies the authors have already considered, this paper especially focuses on the ...

Percussive Dynamic Cone Penetrometer for Geotechnical Surface Assessment with a Planetary

Introduction: During the past planetary surface missions, few instruments have been deployed to directly assess soil physical properties like density, soil strength (internal friction and cohesion), and pressure/sinkage curves, or their spatial variation. Several Soviet lunar missions were equipped with small cone vane penetrometers, and the Apollo astronauts also used two different manual pene...
